Protective Clothing Required for Beekeeping
If you are interested in bees and believe that taking this up as a hobby would be fun, you will need to learn about beekeeping before starting. One of the very important things that you must do before working with bees is making a supply list; on that supply list will be clothing. Bees can be aggressive and stinging can occur so wearing beekeeping clothing is very important to protect yourself.
Learning about clothing may not seem interesting, which it may not be, but it is very important. When clothing is discussed, you will be advised that you need to invest in a hat and veil, a suit, gloves and shoes or boots. The particular pieces should be explained as to why you need them and what type is the best for when. It is strongly suggested to wear each piece every time you care for your bees regardless if you are somewhat in the vicinity of the hive or working directly in the hive when harvesting the honey.
The hat and veil may be one of the most important piece as they cover the head and neck area which has no protection whatsoever from possible stings. The hat should fit snugly and has a brim that covers at least the eye area. The veil is attached to the hat and should ball at least to the shoulders but should really be longer than that. The material the veil is made of is usually of strong cotton in which the webbing is very small so that bees go through.
The suit is usually a of a one piece construction. There is only one entry point to put the suit on and there should be elastic at the cuffs and ankles. The collar area should rise up toward the head to help protect the neck area. The opening can be either a zipper or Velcro. The suit should be made from a thick material, help you stay cool and allow you to breathe. In addition, the suit should not be tight fitting but loose enough for you to be able to easily bend over if you needed to pick something up off of the ground. The color should be a light variation, usually white as this is less disturbing to the bees that a darker color which they associate with predators.
When you are told that you should wear gloves, made of leather, you may think that gloves are constricting to a point but they are necessary especially when your hands are right next to or in the hive. You may be moving slowly and wearing white but if the bees feel that their hive is being attacked, you’ll be stung. Shoes or preferably boots should be sturdy and made of a thick material so that the stingers cannot penetrate the material.
Beekeeping clothing is an important part of beekeeping. The clothing is to protect you. You are important and caring for yourself is just as important as caring for you.

Beekeeper Honey: The Golden Treasure
Having a hobby is great but having a hobby that can provide benefits is even better. If you are interested in bees and become a beekeeper, then you can enjoy both having a hobby and getting honey at harvest time is very exciting. Beekeeper honey is some of the best honey on the market.
In nature, many animals have known for many centuries that bees can produce honey. When a predator is attempting to get honey from a hive, they usually end up destroying the hive and the colony must find a new home and start their work from scratch. When you are educating your self about beekeeping and the necessary steps to care for the hive and its inhabitants, you will learn what hives are available and the proper care that is necessary for both the hive as well as the bees.
Honey has become a household item in which we use it in all sorts of food and drink. Most of us buy honey at our local grocery store but what about the rest of us? Where do those people buy their honey? The small group of people who do not buy their honey at the store buy it directly from a beekeeper or they have their own bees and enjoy the honey that their bees produce.
Why does this small group of people choose to buy elsewhere? Why isn’t the honey in the store good enough for them? The beekeeper honey may be harvested in the same manner, but how the honey is treated once harvested is much different. The big companies mass produce their product and order to do so, they must process the honey in a different manner due to time constraints and other criteria such as being filtered and heated.
When buying your honey from a beekeeper, you are usually getting honey that is harvested locally. This is a benefit to you especially in regards to allergies; it has been said that if you eat honey that is grown locally, it will assist in the fight against allergies that you may have. When a smaller operation is harvesting honey and selling it for profit, the honey is raw when placed into a container. The only thing that may have been done to the honey would be have been strained it to ensure that any particles of the honeycomb wax.
Raw honey is said to have pollen, natural enzymes, vitamins and minerals and even amino acids. When the honey is consumed in this more natural processed way, there are greater health benefits that one can receive. Beekeeper honey is also said to have antioxidants and to be a great energy source.
So the next time that you need honey for a recipe or just to have in your tea, remember that there are healthier options available to you and to try and buy honey that is raw and is locally made.

The Beekeeper Hat and Veil
Being around nature can be very relaxing and soothing to the sole. Working with nature can be rewarding but can also be somewhat of a hazard depending upon which creature you are working with. Working with bees is not extremely hazardous but if you are not careful, the number of stings that you could receive would definitely increase without the proper care. Being stung on or around the head and neck area seems to hurt more than other areas so wearing a beekeeper hat is an essential item you will need.
Having the right gear on before getting close to a beehive is very important. You will want as much protection as possible covering your body so that the possibility of being stung has been reduced as much as possible. The right clothing consists of the hat and veil, the suit, gloves and shoes. Every piece of clothing should be made of a sturdy material in which the sting of a bee cannot penetrate so that you are protected whenever you are around the bees.
The purpose of the hat and veil is to protect you from being stung. The hat should have a brim and also a chin strap to securely hold the hat on. You don’t want the hat to be loose, bend over the hive and the hat falling off. In addition, the hat should be a perfect fit to your head so that the hat is not loose. The veil is also very important for the protection of your face and neck. The material the veil is made of is usually cotton and should allow you to breathe easily but the webbing should be tight enough so that a bee cannot fit through into where you are. Also, the veil should fall at least to your shoulders but preferably longer so that you could tuck it in if you wanted. Again, the sole purpose is to keep you sting-free.
If you’re looking online to buy a hat, there are numerous sites that have them available to purchase. When buying online, make sure you are buying from a reputable seller. If you are thinking about buying a used hat, make sure that it is in good condition and that there are no holes in the veil. If the veil should be replaced, it is possible to obtain a replacement. You do not want to go without the veil.
You can make your own beekeeper hat if you don’t have one yet and it is rather easy to do. You can use a cowboy hat or some other type of hat that has a decent brim that goes around the head and will stay securely on your head. For the veil, you can use a light weight mesh with very small holes and either pin or stitch into the brim of the hat. When attaching the veil to the hat, make sure that it is secure and there are no gaps in which a bee could get through.
